529 News & Research

Here is what you need to know from stories, research, and data released this week:
- 529 Insiders, “1Q 2024 529 & ABLE market sizing highlights.” Editor’s Take: What was the 529 and ABLE market sizing as of 1Q 2024 (March 31, 2024)? Click the link to learn more.
- Federal Reserve Bank of New York, “Household Debt and Credit Report (Q1 2024).” Editor’s Take: Student loan debt reached $1.595 trillion as of March 2024, with 0.80% of the total amount flowing into serious delinquency as defined as 90 days or more delinquent. This delinquency rate is temporarily low in 2024 due to the U.S. Department of Education providing an 12-month repayment restart period where missed monthly payments are not considered delinquent during through September 30, 2024 (source). In the meantime, this report provides high quality data on outstanding household debt. Separately, the resource here reports labor market outcomes of college graduates by major, which can help families to strategize and to save and pay for educational costs based on projected educational outcomes. Read and bookmark, so that the data is available for your future reports and story boards.
- Penn State, “529 Plans.” Editor’s Take: This webpage provides a look at the 529 distribution process from the college or university’s point of view, while this page provides insight into the payment process and options including eCheck, credit card (with a 2.25% service fee), check or money order, international payments via Flywire, or installment payment plans (with an enrollment and processing fee). Together, colleges and universities provide multiple payment options with differing levels of fees, and paying from a 529 plan is a straightforward process without processing or enrollment fees. In other works, an additional benefit of saving for education with a 529 that is typically not included in calculations is the removal of additional fees such as the 2.25% service fee for paying with a credit card. Read the article to learn more about the payments side of the education financial planning process
- My College Corner (YouTube), “Ask the expert about smart college investing.” Editor’s Take: Thank you My College Corner and John Hupalo for the opportunity to discuss how families discuss and perceive the value of 529s and ABLE accounts, 529 Day, the growth of 529s, and trends in ABLE accounts. Please watch the 27-minute video interview, thank you John Hupalo and share.
