Here is what you need to know from stories, research, and data released this week:

  • 529 Insiders, “Status Board: State Income Tax Treatment on 529 Distributions to Roth IRAs.” Editor’s Take: Effective 2024, certain types of qualified transfers from 529s to Roth IRAs will be allowed from a federal income tax perspective. From a state income tax perspective, this article categorizes the transfer as a qualified expense, non-qualified expense or decision pending for residents and workers in those states based on publicly available information. This article will be updated over time as more information is received and incorporated. In the interim and as of December 9th, 25 states categorize qualifying distributions from 529s to Roth IRAs as a qualified expense for their residents from a state income tax perspective, while 7 states categorize the transaction as non-qualified and 18 states plus D.C. are still pending a decision.

  • YouTube: A few providers have created and shared educational videos on ABLE accounts including ABLEnow with The Arc of North Virginia and Colorado ABLE with Advocacy Denver. Additionally, URS Advisory created an educational video in support of their clients as part of a lead generation process, which allows you to see how advisors and estate planners can grow their book of clients with ABLE accounts and special needs planning. Last but not least, it is great to see XY Planning Network working with Chris Rodriquez on an education video for their base of advisors.
